The Kalamazoo News: Recycled tires used in experimental paving project in Kalamazoo County. This project was made possible by a grant through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in cooperation with Michigan Technological University, the press release said. The grant was awarded to the local road commission on April 18.

CBS Detroit News: Researchers: Rubberized Asphalt May Be Key to Solving Michigan’s Road Woes. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has awarded several grants to study rubberized asphalt, including two totaling $1.2 million to Michigan Technological University.

Morning Sun: Michigan researchers look at roads with asphalt-rubber mix. Houghton, Mich. (AP): Michigan Technological University researchers are helping study whether building roads using asphalt mixed with rubber from ground-up scrap tires is a good idea for states like Michigan.

The Detroit News: Houghton-Researchers at Michigan Technological University are helping study whether building roads using asphalt mixed with rubber from ground-up scrap tires is a good idea for states like Michigan.

ABC10up: HOUGHTON-Rubber roads. No it will not turn rush hour into a game of bumper cars, but researchers at Michigan Tech feel it is the best way to go to save money and protect the environment. The project, which is led by Civil and Environmental Engineering department chair David Hand, has already been awarded over $1 million in grants from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Dr. Zhanping You said there are many benefits to switching to rubberized asphalt.

CBS Detroit: HOUGHTON, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Could scrap rubber hold the answers needed to fix Michigan crumbling roads? Michigan Technological University researchers are helping study whether building roads using asphalt mixed with rubber from ground-up scrap tires is a good idea for states like Michigan.

Michigan Radio: A group of researchers at Michigan Technological University is conducting tests to find out if traditional asphalt mixed with rubber from scrap tires could make better roads in Michigan. Professor Zhanping You has been studying the technology of rubberized asphalt for eight years. He says rubber-added asphalt can make roads more durable and make life easier for drivers.

PaintSquare: Rubberized asphalt, made from thousands of ground-up scrap tires, has been a fixture of southern roads for 50 years. Such roads are quieter, last longer and provide a welcome non-landfill home for old tires, experts say. But can they hold up to the rigors of four seasons, including tough, long Michigan winters? Two new state-funded studies at Michigan Technological University aim to find out.
