Program Introduction
Supplemental support from the National Science Foundation enables us to offer Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) scholarships for students at seven target colleges/universities in the Great Lakes region including
- Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College (KBOCC flyer);
- Bay Mills Community College, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College, Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College, College of Menominee Nation, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College;
- Michigan Technological University
REU scholarships are awarded to students who conduct research projects designed to advance training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields through participation in research relevant to the student's degree. A priority for this REU program is that projects are also relevant to ASEP-related concerns of Native American communities in the Great Lakes Region. These communities are disproportionately affected by atmosphere-surface exchangeable pollutants (ASEPs). ASEPs are toxic to humans, other animals, and ecosystems, and while they are produced or used in one geographic area, they are disseminated globally. Certain ASEPs accumulate in organisms and harm humans and wildlife at locations far from the areas of production/use. ASEP-related harm to regional Native Americans may be greater than to others because the physical, cultural, and spiritual health of these communities depends on the Great Lakes Region's wild foods and other ecosystem services to a greater extent than others'.
The National Science Foundation supplement enables us to offer $4,000 scholarships to up to ten students at target colleges in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The program enables students to conduct a research project and receive mentoring from Michigan Tech researchers as well as a faculty/advisor mentor at their home institution. Limited funding is also available for travel support to enable scholars to attend local and regional conferences related to their research in the ASEP Project.
Eligibility: Funding is restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. To qualify, students must be enrolled full- or part-time at one of the target colleges.
Application process: Complete the application package and supply it to Ms. Angela Keranen at Michigan Technological University at least one month prior to the term in which you wish to begin your REU project (e.g., August 1 for September 1 start; December 1 for January 1 start; April 1 for May 1 start).
Scholar expectations: Scholarships are contingent upon submission of a completed contract signed by the scholar, the primary mentor at his or her home college, and the primary ASEP project investigator mentor. The contract specifies the time period for carrying out the project and its completion, goals of the REU project, modifications relative to the posted project description, a tentative list of tasks, plans for regular meetings, and anticipated outcomes and deliverables. Scholars are expected to complete 300 hours of research and will be paid a Michigan Tech stipend over the scholarship time period stated in the contract. To request funding for travel, an application is submitted to the ASEP Project Director.
