Frequently Asked Questions
Are only students of Native American descent eligible for an REU scholarship through this program?
This program is open to all undergraduates enrolled at one of the target universities.
How many REU scholarships do you expect to award?
We expect to award up to ten scholarships three months before the ASEP Project ends on 2/28/18.
Can my instructors send their letters of recommendation by email?
All application materials can be submitted via email to amkerane@mtu.edu, via fax to 906-487-2943 or by regular mail to:
Angela Keranen, REU Coordinator
Michigan Technological University
1400 Townsend Dr.
Houghton, MI 49931
Do my recommendations have to be sent by instructors of courses I have taken?
No. You are welcome to have your recommendations sent by anyone whom you feel can make the best case in support of your application. In general, it is more important to choose someone who knows you well and can provide a good picture of your abilities than to choose someone who doesn't know you but has an impressive sounding title. However, since we are hiring students to participate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research projects, instructors who teach these classes are more likely to be able to address relevant criteria than could other instructors or people who know you for other reasons.
Is an unofficial transcript acceptable?
Yes, we only need an unofficial transcript for the application process. However, if you are selected for the program and you choose to attend, then we would need an official transcript at that time in order to get you officially enrolled in the program.
How can I get an unofficial transcript that I can print and send?
Your college may have an online menu that you can use to view your transcript in a web browser. Many web browsers allow you to print the page to a .pdf file (choose the Print... option) or save the page to a .pdf file (choose Save Page As... option) under the File menu. You could print your transcript or scan it to create a .pdf file.
What are the criteria used in the selection process?
This is a difficult question since each participant is selected by the individual faculty advisor with whom s/he will work. Obviously good grades and strong recommendations are important. Individual advisors may also look for particular things such as a good grade in a particular course. However, many advisors simply look for someone who is bright, hardworking, and enthusiastic.
I didn't receive a confirmation that my application was received or that my file was complete. How do I know whether you have received all of my materials?
It is your responsibility to make sure your referees get their recommendations submitted on time and to be sure your application and transcript arrive on time. We ask that you only contact Ms. Angela Keranen (amkerane@mtu.edu) if you suspect there has been a specific problem with part or all of your application package. We also request that you don't make multiple requests for updates on the status of your application as we cannot respond to every request.
Is funding for travel, food, or housing included in the stipend for REU participants?
Students may use their stipends to support travel, food, or housing costs; no specific allowance is available for housing or travel costs. Limited funding is available for scholars to travel to local or regional conferences or workshops related to their research.
Is itemized reimbursement for travel to meet with ASEP investigators for regular research meetings a part of the scholarship?
No. Ground transport costs using personal transportation come from the $4,000 scholarship.
When will I be notified as to whether I have been accepted into the program?
You will be notified as to whether you have been accepted into the program within one month of receipt of your complete application.
Can I earn course credit for research by participating in the REU program?
This depends on the requirements of your college. Your research may be used for a capstone project or for an internship; at some colleges, these qualify for course credits.
Can either internships and capstone design projects be conducted through this REU program in order to meet degree requirements?
Yes, both can be done. Work with your academic advisor to determine the type of project that best fulfills your degree requirements.
