Biography

Dr. Urban’s research interests focus on the biogeochemistry of aquatic systems, particularly lakes and wetlands.  He has studied cycling of nutrients, trace metals, and major elements in wetlands, small and Great Lakes; sediment diagenesis; carbon cycling in Lake Superior; sediment accumulation and resuspension in reservoirs and Great Lakes; mercury deposition and cycling in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; transport and release of trace metals from mine tailings; and bioaccumulation of toxics in fish.  He has published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Great Lakes Research, Limnology and Oceanography, Geochimicia et Cosmochimica Acta, Journal of Geophysical Research, and Biogeochemistry.  Current research includes determinants of contaminant bioaccumulation in lakes across varying spatial scales; the contribution of legacy mining to mercury cycling in the Keweenaw Peninsula; and bridging knowledge systems and expertise to understand contaminant cycling in a contaminated Tribal landscape system.
