Torch Lake Area of Concern

Source: U.S. EPA

Dr. Charles Kerfoot of MTU’s Department of Biological Sciences has expertise in the biology of Lake Superior and has been studying mining impacts on the lake and adjacent waters. The Torch Lake Area of Concern (also a Superfund Site) includes areas with widely scattered deposits of waste materials which have accumulated over more than 100 years of copper mining, milling, and smelting activities. The tour will visit abandoned mining operations, degraded shoreline, and restored habitat on Torch Lake. A representative of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the body overseeing restoration, will co-host the tour.
