Transportation
By car, MTU is 550 miles from Detroit, 420 miles from Chicago, 260 miles from Sault Ste. Marie and 215 miles from Duluth, over freeways and good two-lane roads. (See map on MapQuest.) Free parking will be available at campus residence halls. Houghton is served by Greyhound lines and Mesaba-Northwest Airlink. There are approximately six flights daily connecting through Detroit and Minneapolis. Rental cars (National) are available at the airport. The conference will provide free transportation to and from the bus station and airport. Email your arrival-departure times to Lori Witting at ljwittin@mtu.edu to make arrangements.
Food (Conference Package, $50)
Registrants are encouraged to take advantage of the convenience and economy of the conference food package. Commercial restaurants are available in downtown, ~1-2 miles from campus. The conference food package includes 9 meals: breakfast on
Wednesday-Saturday, lunch on Wednesday-Friday, and dinner on Wednesday and
Thursday. Breakfasts and lunches will be provided by university dining halls, including a box lunch for the field trip. Evening meals include a miner’s dinner served aboard the cruise ship and the conference banquet hosted by the university’s catering service. Please indicate vegetarian or non-vegetarian preferences when registering.
Lodging (Conference Package, $120)
Accommodations are available at Wadsworth Hall (suite-type rooms with connecting bathroom shared between two adjacent rooms) and Douglas Houghton Hall (single rooms with a shared bathroom down the hall). Please refer to the campus map for locations. The conference package is for four nights lodging. Additionally, blocks of rooms have been reserved (until 19 April 2002) at two motels located near campus (15-20 minute walk): Best Western Franklin Square Inn (906-487-1700; $65 per person per day, includes breakfast coupon) and Super 8 Motel (906-482-2240; $45 single/$50 double, includes breakfast).
