Thomas
R. Irwin, P.E., Class of '63, MSBA '66
Mr. Thomas Irwin, President of H & D,
Inc., completed his baccalaureate degree in civil engineering
in 1963 and was President of his graduating class. He returned
to Michigan Tech to earn a master's degree in business administration
in 1966. From there he went on to work as a Plant Engineer
for Dow Chemical for two years before returning to the construction
industry in 1969. In his position with Sivier Construction
in Detroit, he worked on interstate and industrial projects.
Tom joined Hodgkiss & Douma (H&D) of Petoskey, Michigan
in 1978 as Vice President and is currently President of the
company. H & D specializes in heavy highway construction
and major recreational projects.
Professionally, he is a past President of
the Michigan Road Builders Association and past President
of the Michigan Asphalt Paving Association. He is also active
in the community as Director of the Bank of Northern Michigan
and is active in the Petoskey/Harbor Springs Community Foundation.
While at Michigan Tech, Tom was active in
student activities as a member of Blue Key, the Varsity Club,
and Theta Tau fraternity. He has also been a very active alumni
supporter of Michigan Tech and in 1999 was the recipient of
the Outstanding Service Award. He served on the Executive
Council of the Civil and Environmental Engineering 'Partnering
with the Future' Campaign and is currently serving on our
'Educating Graduates of Choice' Campaign Executive Committee.
In addition to serving six years on the Department's Professional
Advisory Committee, he is a member and past President of the
Michigan Tech Fund Board of Trustees, and currently serves
on the Pavement Design Construction Materials Advisory Board.
He has been very helpful in facilitating CEE Department contacts
in the pavement industry. Tom and his wife, Bette, have two
grown children and two grandchildren and live in Bellaire,
Michigan. |
